BSL can provide analytical services through a network of specialist laboratories to a very high standard, critical for the successful interpretation of marine data sets. Most of the analytical techniques engaged are covered by an independent accreditation, such as UKAS, or in the case of macrobenthos, other quality assurance schemes such as the NMBAQC.
Routine laboratory analyses and interpretation are as follows:
- Full particle size analysis (including <63µm)
- Organic matter (by loss on ignition)
- Carbonates (acid digestion)
- TOC & TON (by element analyser)

- Total Hydrocarbons, UCMs and Aliphatics by GC-FID
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (16/26 fraction) by GC-MS
- Pesticides, VOCs, SVOCs & PCBs by GC-MS
- Heavy & trace metals (AR, HF, and fusion techniques)
- Macrofaunal taxonomy (experienced in 0-2000m water depth)
- UK, West Africa, South Atlantic, Mediterranean, Southeast Asia & Middle East.
- Water analysis for nutrients, metals, organics and chlorophyll.
